History
King City may be a shining gem today, but prior to its modern identity as a high-end, up-and-coming community, this exclusive York Region hotspot can trace its roots to farmland and early settlers. King Township, which consists of Schomberg, King City and Nobleton, was first settled by Europeans four centuries ago.
Although French explorer Étienne Brûlé set foot in the region in 1615, the area didn’t receive its present day moniker until 1794. It was only then that this region was named King, in honour of John King, who was the British undersecretary at the time. Following this, King was also home to American settlers such as the United Empire Loyalists and the Pennsylvania Quakers.
Since its early days, the mills and farms of King City have proudly defined this community in an authentic manner. Today, King City continues to pride itself on its humble roots as a farming community. Grist mills and sawmills lay at the heart of King City’s history, as a result of the soil and streams which surrounded this prosperous area.
While King City has certainly urbanized today into a rising 905 destination just a short commute from the lights of Toronto, it still provides a mixture of laidback rural charm combined with urban activity.
